The Squads

The Tri Kids Squad is aimed as an introduction to triathlon for Primary/Intermediate school children 9 years old up to High School.  The focus is on skill development, technique, games, basic fitness and having fun.

There are typically two sessions per week:

  • Thursday afternoons – swim/run session (either QEII or Jellie Park)
  • Sunday mornings – bike/run session (either Wigram, QEII, or Corsair Bay)

The Tri Devils is for junior high school students.  It is a step up from the Tri Kids programme in terms of slightly more physical training but there will still be a large emphasis on technique and skill work.

There are typically two sessions per week:

  • Thursday afternoons – swim/run session (either QEII or Jellie Park)
  • Sunday mornings – bike/run session (either Wigram, QEII or Corsair Bay)

The Black Squad is targeted at high school students aged 15-18 years.

It is open to athletes of all abilities.  In the New Year, there will be a performance squad (Red Squad) established if there is sufficient demand.

The Black Squad is a step up from the Tri Devils with more focus on general conditioning.  This age group races over a slightly longer distance and the training sessions will reflect this.

There are typically 3-4 sessions per week:

  • Monday evenings – run session (at QEII)
  • Thursday afternoons – bike or bike/run session (either from Opawa or The Princess Margaret Hospital)
  • Saturday mornings – swim/bike/run (Corsair Bay)

The main contact for the Black Squad is John Newsom – email coach@canterburytriclub.co.nz, telephone 981 7508 or 021 399 774.
